HISTORY OF OPOKU WARE SCHOOL NAME: OPOKU WARE ESTABLISHED: 1952 GENDER: BOYS COLOUR: BLUE AND YELLOW MOTTO: DIEU LUX SCIENTIAE NICKNAME: AKATAKYIE Opoku Ware School often referred to as OWASS, is a Senior High school for boys in Ashanti Region of Ghana. It was established in 1952, as one of the 5 Catholic Schools in Ghana that year. It was named after the Asante King Opoku Ware I. Until its established youth from Ashanti Kingdom and the Northern part of Ghana who wanted Catholic education had to travel south across the pra River to attend secondary school. At a meeting held on 31st January 1951, a decision was taken to build q Roman Catholic Mission Secondary School. The government was to provide all the funds for the building of the school. The school was meant for 360 students with a possible expansion of the sixth form. It was to be developed according to a ten-year development plan, and the final cost was estimated at £250,000. OWASS opened its doors on 28th February 1952 to young boyz to the school, originally called Yaa Asantewaa College, two weeks time, the name change to OPOKU WARE SCHOOL following consultations with and instruction from the Manhyia Palace. This was to honour one of the most illustious Asante Kings, who in May 1744 approached the Roman Catholic Mission at the Elmina Castle to educate Asante Youth. The late Rev. FR P.R Burgess, an Oxford University graduate was sthe first headmaster of the school. He was the son of an Irish draper and a former major in British Army. The boys spent their first night at St. Pauls House, the only dormitory with in what was a desolate clearing. The first Ghanaian headmaster was the late Mr. Kwame Adu Amankwah from 1963 - 1969 and the now the current headmaster is Mr. F. Matthew Oppong Mensah from 2011 till date. OWASS is the only school to identify each students with his number and also has won the Ashanti Region Inter Schools and Athletics Competition than any school for Nine(9) Times n the last time they won was 2008. #LONG_LIVE_OPOKU_WARE_SCHOOL #LONG_LIVE_AKATAKYIE NOTE: NEXT SCHOOL IS #ASANTEMAN THUS TOMORROW THANKS!!!
