HISTORY OF THE ROSARY Although the word ROSARY is not used in the Bible and there was no record of the use of prayer beads by the Christians of the apostolic era, the developmental and elemental origin of the Rosary can be traced back to the Scriptures especially the Gospels. One of the twelve Apostles asked the Lord and Master Jesus Christ, “Lord, teach us how to pray” and the Lord Jesus Christ taught them the prayer formula we have today as “Our Father…” (Mt. 6:9-13; Lk.11:2-4). This then became the prayer of the Apostles and early Christians. Ever before this time was the first part of the “Hail Mary…” The Archangel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin whose name was Mary, came to her and greeted, “Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with you”(Lk 1:28). On Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, the Babe in Elizabeth’s womb leapt for Joy at the greeting of Mary. Being inspired by the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and Blessed is the Fruit of your womb”(Lk 1:42) who is Jesus Christ. The “Glory be to the Father…” has no direct reference in the Scriptures but it is the praise of the Trinity which is dated to time of the very early Christians. (cf. Jn. 11:4; Eph 1:17) The Mysteries (Joyful, Light, Sorrowful and Glorious) have their bases in the New Testament Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles and Traditions of the Church. They tell of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and about the life of the Church. These are given explicitly except the last two mysteries of the Glorious Mystery namely: Assumption and Coronation, which have implicit background in the Scripture but rest more on the Tradition of the Church.
