HIT REPORT 23 August 2014 Todays trip was a surveillance and information gathering exercise that took most of the day. Joined by the Dorset and Berkshire groups we visited the kennels of the Culmstock mink hounds in Devon. The Culmstock hunt has been effectively sabbed several times over the summer months and they are never very happy to see us. Quietly sitting in gateways and lanes we observed the comings and goings of various vehicles. However, our presence didnt go unnoticed and one group was visited by the angry, usually bloody kennel man in his meat waggon. His nose may have been put out of joint by our presence but at least he failed to do the same to one of our sabs when attempting to remove their face covering. Assault in the eyes of the law. A useful trip, a good knowledge was gained as to the lie of the land, the river systems and vantage points. Also routes to their favoured meet points. If you hunt illegally you will be stopped at every opportunity. So when you decide you want to take a pack of dogs through a water meadow filled with botanical gifts and up a pristine river bank where many of our endangered animals live, remember ~ We are watching you. The day ended well as the last few hours of daylight were used to do some sett surveying. A short walk revealed a well hidden badger sett, another one we can protect when the cull begins. There are many such setts in the cull zone, many of us live very close by and have built up a great affection for the inhabitants as well as firm knowledge that the cull is political rather than scientific. If you would like to help protect our badgers from the shooters, please contact the Somerset Badger Patrol and join their patrols. The walks follow the lanes and footpaths and take in some of the countrys most beautiful views. So join in! Help keep the badgers safe, make new friends along the way and enjoy the stunning countryside of West Somerset.
