HIV Treatment Revolution to Bring Treatment to Millions A new study lead by researchers at Australia’s Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales has shown that a one third of the standard dosage of the antiretroviral efavirenz is as effective in suppressing the virus as the normal dosage. This means that the same amount of drug will be able to be spread between many more people across the world. The trial was conducted with HIV-positive people from around the world, from Africa to Latin America, to Europe and Asia. In the trial half the participants took half the standard dose and the other half took the standard dose and all were observed for a year. This discovery will hopefully allow millions more HIV-positive people around the world to get treatment, especially in areas of high risk such as Asia and Africa. This is one fantastic step towards making the world a much better place with a lot less hurt. (x)
