The largest units are detached houses measuring 169 sq m, valued at $95,000, while the smallest variation was a 90 sq m terrace unit valued at $38,000. The Kg Panchor (Mengkubau) National Housing Scheme is one of the largest housing estates in the country with 4,000 units built at a cost of $388 million under the supervision of the Brunei Economic Development Board. The estate sits on a 309 hectare plot complete with fibre-optic telecommunications, a recreational park and direct access to the highway. His Majesty took time to visit some of the residents in Kg Panchor yesterday, and also signed a commemorative plaque to officiate the opening of the housing estate. Residents throughout Panchor flocked to the monarch upon his arrival, inviting him into their homes to sign their house plaques and taking the opportunity to grab candid shots with His Majesty. He visited two schools in the capital following the key handover ceremony – Pulaie Primary School and Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri – chatting with students and faculty while inspecting facilities at the schools. The monarch also explored various cottage industries during his outing yesterday, stopping by the home of the Kg Pancha Delima village head and Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park. His Majesty ended his visit at the Mangrove Paradise Resort where he inspected new developments, such as the construction of a surau and waterfront chalets. The National Housing Scheme is an initiative of His Majesty’s Government to provide housing to residents who do not own land. To date, the Ministry of Development has awarded more than 27,000 homes to applicants who fulfil the criteria for subsidised housing. Within the next two years, another 2,000 units of public housing will be completed, said the ministry.
