HM queen Mathilde of Belgium opened a debate on culture and development in Brussels earlier this evening to mark the launch of the European Year for Development 2015. In attendance were also representatives from UNESCO and the EU Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development. They advocated for culture to have the same importance as financing, environment and social cohesion in development projects. HM the queen even argued that culture is a prerequisite to solving global problems of conflicts, poverty, radicalisation of young people, refugees and youth unemployment.
