HMGOG Congratulates Michael Llamas on Appointment as AG Designate Her Majestys Government of Gibraltar congratulates Michael Llamas QC on his appointment as Attorney General (designate ) by His Excellency the Governor. The Government is pleased that the appointment has been made in good time before Mr Rhodas announced retirement in May this year, demonstrating a commitment to succession planning which will not require the important post of Attorney General to remain vacate for any period. The process of appointment of Mr Llamas QC is the first time that the Specified Appointments Commission set up under the 2006 Constitution has a ppointed an Attorney General for Gibraltar. A number of procedural issues have been thrown up by the application, interview and appointment process. As a result, the Government and the Convent have set up a high level working group to agree a protocol to address such issues in the context of future Specified Appointment Commission appointments. Addressing the appointment of Mr Llamas QC, the Chief Minister, Hon Fabian Picardo QC MP, said: The appointment of Michael Llamas QC to the post of Attorney General is to be welcomed by the whole community. He is the first Gibraltarian AG of modern times. Since he was appointed Chief Legal Adviser to the Government by the previous Administration, Mr Llamas has been shouldering the burden of much of the advisory work done for the Government in civil matters. There can be no doubt that he will be an excellent AG for Gibraltar when he takes over from Mr Rhoda CBE QC. This appointment is appropriate recognition of his legal talent and hard work.
