HOBOKEN SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO GROW COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM The City of Hoboken invites members of the community to join its growing Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). State-certified trainers will hold a series of free CERT classes this fall for up to 60 participants. “Resilient communities begin with resilient people,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “Under the leadership of CERT Coordinator Lou Casciano, volunteers helped save lives during Hurricane Sandy, and they are a critical part of keeping us safe both during emergencies and planned events. I thank Lou and our new Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Lt. Ken Ferrante for their work to keep our community safe.” Following Hurricane Sandy, interest in CERT grew tremendously. The City graduated its third CERT class in April with 55 members – by far the largest – bringing to 65 the total number of trained volunteers. CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area. If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional response, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learned during training. These skills can help save and sustain lives following a disaster until help arrives. CERT skills also apply to daily emergencies. If interested in joining CERT, please download and complete the application (hobokennj.org/docs/publicsafety/CERT-application.doc) and return by email to [email protected]. Participation in CERT requires the successful completion of a training course on a range of subject matter specific to emergency response and disaster relief. All classes will be conducted at the Elks Club, 1005 Washington Street starting at 7:00 pm and ending at 9:30 pm. The training schedule is as follows: 10/1/2013 – Disaster Preparedness 10/8/2013 – Fire safety 10/15/2013 – Disaster Medical Operations 1 10/22/2013 – Disaster Medical Operations 2 10/29/2013 – Light Search and Rescue Operations 11/5/2013– CERT Organization 11/12/2013 – Disaster Psychology 11/19/2013 – Terrorism and CERT A final drill and exercise will take place at a date to be determined. Participants must attend every module of training as well as participate in the final emergency simulation exercise in order to receive certification as a fully trained CERT Team member. Upon completion of the training, each participant will be issued a CERT Member Emergency Kit to maintain for future deployments.
