HOCKEY: Kingstons Amanda Leveille of the University of Minnesota Gophers will be at the White House on Monday as U.S. President Barack Obama will be recognizing NCAA Div-I mens and womens champions from the 2012-13 season in a formal ceremony on the South Lawn. Leveille, 19, a former Greater Kingston Jr. Frontenacs goaltender who went on to play two seasons with the Ottawa Jr. Senators of the Provincial Womens Hockey League, served as backup to Finnish national team goaltender Noora Raty with the 2012-13 Gophers and did not give up a goal in nearly 280 minutes of action. She appeared in seven games, starting three, and went 3-0. From 2011 to 2013, the Gophers had an unprecedented 62-game winning streak and capped off a historic 41-0-0 record in 2013 with their second straight national championship. The Gophers beat Boston University, 6-3, for the national championship last March. This season as a sophomore, Leveille has started 38 games, going 36-1-1 with 13 shutouts, and has given up just 40 goals for a 1.07 goals-against average and an astounding .950 save percentage. She leads the nation in wins and save percentage, and is second in minutes played (2,236), goals-against average and shutouts. On Saturday, with Leveille in goal, the Gophers defeated the University of North Dakota, 3-1, to claim their third consecutive WCHA championship (sprt.ca/1fPkOnZ). The top-seeded Gophers will host Boston University on Saturday, March 15, in the quarter-finals of the 2014 NCAA championship. Check out Leveille’s complete statistics package at sprt.ca/1fPm8Hp.
