HOLDING WATER After the reassuring rain soothed our fear of fire, a flood! For a minute it seemed the water had again targeted my meagre possessions - even after they had been moved from two prone locations past to a safer, parental, zone. Though the carpet of only that room was soaked, Im profoundly relieved to say they survived without real damage this time. I cant work out whether moisture just loves music - or whether the water is attempting a reciprocal response to my lifetime of swims. Either way, it seems overwhelming elemental energy will never let me lock it out! (Incidentally, facespook readers are advised to subscribe to our newsletter here - jackshithouse/mailing.html - sadly youre missing many arresting images and something like 20 links per week by reading this info only on this limited and limiting portal) Friday November the 1st ~ Concepts of crime and punishment are at the heart of RN Drive this week, as we welcome two speakers from the Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Guardian journo Erwin James is a convicted murderer seeking to focus on the necessity of rehabilitation, given that most prisoners (like himself) will one day be released back into the community. Meanwhile ex Baltimore cop Peter Moskos proposes a way to avoid prison altogether in his book, In Defense of Flogging. Well see if either argument holds any water between 6 and 8PM. abc.net.au/radionational/programs/drive/ Immediately afterwards Ill be heading to Miss Peaches to play New Orleans fare and more, from half 9 til midnight, for free. https://facebook/misspeachesnewtown Oddly it was in said Southern Capitol that Moskos first came up with his notion - due to the popularity of corporal punishment in schools there. I can assure you the type of education we dish out atop the Marly is cut from a kinder cloth. Saturday November the 2nd ~ Now hows this for topical? While searching for a picture that would serve to clue you in on the presence of Treme and The Wire creator David Simon (speaking on the topic Some People Are More Equal Than Others) at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas tonight, Ive discovered that actor Rob Brown has been falsely accused of credit card fraud in Macys New York by police that he is now suing. I mean how could a black man afford a $1350 watch otherwise right?! And it was to be a gift for his mothers graduation! Some sweet memories courtesy of the racists on the NYPD there - and not even for the first time this week! nydailynews/new-york/black-man-sues-macy-cuffed-making-legit-purchase-article-1.1496735 I raise this as Ill be reprising my role as FODIs resident deejay in the Western foyers of the Opera House all weekend - which will preclude me from hosting Jack Off this time around. Visitors will find me playing to the public for free between 12.30 and 4.30PM - and Ill call in to FBi with an update on the goings on during the show also. fodi.sydneyoperahouse/some-people-are-more-equal-than-others/ Those tuned in from 3 til 5PM will hear Amy Robinson hosting live songs and wry chats with both Don Walker and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. fbiradio/program/jack-off/ Much later Ill get to spinning tunes for loons at The Vic Hotel. Its free - and the ideal way to wrap up a big night, with friends old and new, kicking on from midnight til around half two. https://facebook/thevicenmore Sunday November the 3rd ~ Sunday will be yr last chance to bathe in the light of the mind at FODI. Take a gander at the program and head out for a stroll if youve never been before - its a richly rewarding experience amongst a very convivial crowd down by the Quay. Ill be stirring in some subtle audio angles throughout the afternoon - if youd just like to lap up the atmosphere for a spell, you can join me there from midday til 4PM. fodi.sydneyoperahouse/ Thats all for this week. I hope you and yours have made it through this wild weather in one peace. Next week Im off to the Shaky Isles but Ill still have a few remote radio clues to share here - plus further gig info for our Trans Tasman readers. I should take this opportunity to remind anyone tossing up travel or entertainment plans for New Years that Falls in both Lorne and Byron has sold out. This is of concern only in as much as it indicates that the best Falls Fest, in Marion Bay, Tasmania, will be next. Just today Ive heard the somewhat incredible news that Ill again be the main-stage DJ between acts over the key 4 hours from 10PM til 2AM on NYE. While thats not exactly a selling point, the rest of the line-up sure is! Wed love to see you there. marionbay.fallsfestival.au/
