HOME MAINTENANCE TIP OF THE DAY: Water mark removal on furniture The Titanic, which sank in 1912, was found on this day in 1985. Folks were surprised to find some of its fine wood furniture was still in good condition after 73 years underwater. But sometimes just a teensy-weensy drop of water on fine furniture leaves nasty spots or a white ring that looks like a life preserver. Or worse, its smooth-as-glass surface gets a small scratch. For watermarks, rub on a little mayonnaise, cover with plastic wrap, wait 30 minutes, remove the wrap, and gently rub with a nylon-scouring pad. Work with the grain, then wipe with a soft cloth. For small scratches do the same, using olive oil or any oily nut -- like a pecan. Peanut butter works, too. Then restore luster with lemon oil or paste wax. Presto! -- water marks and tiny scratches disappear.
