HOME MAINTENANCE TIP OF THE DAY: Water mark removal on furniture The Titanic, which sank in 1912, was found on this day in 1985. But sometimes just a teensy-weensy drop of water on fine furniture leaves nasty spots or a white ring that looks like a life preserver. Or worse, its smooth-as-glass surface gets a small scratch. For watermarks, rub on a little mayonnaise, cover with plastic wrap, wait 30 minutes, remove the wrap, and gently rub with a nylon-scouring pad. Work with the grain, then wipe with a soft cloth. For small scratches do the same, using olive oil or any oily nut -- like a pecan. Peanut butter works, too. Then restore luster with lemon oil or paste wax. Presto! -- water marks and tiny scratches disappear.
