But he can’t sell them until Monday because the Health Department shut him down over a video of a small mouse. The Health Department dealt a blow to Cronut-loving New Yorkers on Friday, shutting down Dominique Ansel’s Soho bakery for “severe mouse infestation” — but the Frenchman fired back, claiming he’s a victim of his own success. The city closure came one day after a website posted a video of a mouse skittering among the racks of pastries — though the Spring Street home of the famed croissant-donut hybrid has an “A” grade in the window. An inspection last year found “evidence of live mice” and ruled that the kitchen was not vermin proof, but the bakery was not shut down. This time, the city moved quickly, slapping the tell-tale yellow “Closed” sign on the patisserie “because of a severe mouse infestation that requires professional pest control services,” the agency said in a statement. The bakery is expected to reopen by mid-day on Monday. JOE TABACCA/JOE TABACCA FOR THE NEW YORK DAI Dominique Ansel in happier times. That will give foodies three days to poke more fun at Ansel, his much-hyped Cronut and his alleged vermin problem. “Here’s Remy with a Cronut,” tweeted Raphael Brion, an editor at the food blog, Eater, posting a picture of the rat character in “Ratatouille” holding one of Ansel’s signature pastries. The sour publicity for Ansel comes after months of media and public salivation over his unique creations, which also include the now-legendary Milk and Cookie shot glass. Ansel, with the help of a fast-typing publicist, has become a singular tourist attraction downtown, with visitors lining up for hours to sample a Cronut. His cookbook “Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes” is due this October. But the mouse report had some potential fans no longer licking their lips with anticipation. “I’ve always wanted to try the Cronut, now it’s definitly moved down on my bucket list,” New Jersey native Robby Mcbay, 23, told the News. One customer said she’d still visit the bakery, albeit with caution. “This cripples his reputation quite a bit,” said Valbona Sokoli, 24, of the West Village. jsettembre@nydailynews Author: JEANETTE SETTEMBRE Stories From the Web 7 Things That Your IPhone Can Do That You Had No Idea about ...
