HONG KONG: Thousands of people marched to protest against a pro-democracy campaign which has threatened to occupy Hong Kong’s financial district. The pro-Beijing Alliance for Peace and Democracy movement organised the demonstration and has collected over 1.2 million signatures for a petition opposing Occupy Central. Pro-democracy activists Occupy Central have threatened acts of civil disobedience if China’s National People’s Congress does not allow full democratic elections for the chief executive of Hong Kong in 2017. Occupy Central organised an unofficial poll which attracted 800,000 votes in favour of open nominations in the 2017 election, and a large demonstration on July 1.
