HOSTAGE INCIDENT: On May 19 at 8:25pm Harford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 700 block Hickory Limb Circle in Bel Air for a report of a missing 28 year old woman. Jamie Nicole Campbell, of the same address, was last seen by her mother at 2pm that afternoon. She believed her daughter was running some errands in Hunt Valley. As the day progressed and she didnt hear from her daughter she became worried. After checking places she was supposed to have gone and learned she never arrived she contacted police. Police also learned the daughter and her husband, Luis Arturo Hernandez, Jr, 37, of 9314 Perry Hall Blvd., Baltimore had a history of domestic violence and believed they were possibly together. At approximately 8:30pm police initiated a search for the leased Chevy Traverse Campbell was driving. Deputies located the car on a dirt road off Cedar Lane across from the Cedar Lane Sports Complex near Bel Air. Responding deputies approached the car only to be warned off by the suspect. Campbell yelled to police telling them her husband had a gun. Deputies retreated from the car and began negotiations with the suspect. Tactical teams and crisis negotiators were called to the scene attempting to converse with the suspect and encourage him to surrender. Negotiations continued throughout the night to no avail. At approximately 8:55am today, the situation escalated when Sheriff’s Office Command personnel at the scene were notified by members of the Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit that Hernandez was having his wife call family members and begin to say goodbye. In an effort to protect Campbell and prevent Hernandez from taking his own life Sheriff’s Response Team members were authorized to execute an emergency assault. They approached the suspect and as they did so shots were fired. Campbell suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Hernandez also suffered gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Campbell was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company and transported by Maryland State Police Medivac to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit. Her condition is critical. Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting and no other details are available at this time. Hernandez body was removed and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.
