HOT TIP (July 29, 2013) FOREIGN “FILM” SALES (Part 1)… (“Money dictates”) (For all 422 Filmmaking Tips & Updates go to “MOVIE CLOUD” & “LIKE”) -------------------------------------------- FOREIGN SALES: America is saturated with mega-plexes however, the International Market, as every nation builds more and more multiplexes, is exploding… If you have nothing to do just read about how many movie theaters have been built in China in just the past year. And, as multiplexes are built in other nations they (A) need product and (B) have BIG MORTGAGAES. And, as they have BIG MORTGAGES (mortgages are the same in China, India, USA or Australia) the property owner (Movie Theater circuit) wants and actually needs to make a profit. What does this mean? It means that more and more global movie circuits are thinking like American Theater Circuits and want movies that generate profits….at the candy counter! Huh? A 90-minute movie can be rented in a theater at 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, 4:30, 6:00, 7:30, 9:00 & 10:30… However, allow them to sell candy they will rent-the-seat, for $10-$12, 6 times in a day. Now, give the Movie Theater a 120-minute movie and watch what happens. Let’s see if the Movie Theater circuit and their corresponding “booker” says “Wow, 30-minutes more than a 90-minute feature film. Oh the audience will love this. There are going to be so happy for a better value.” Yuk-Yuk-Yuk. That ain’t gonna happen. Cause here’s how the “Booker” for a movie theater thinks. A 90-minute movie they can rent the seat and sell candy 6 times per day. However, a 120-minute movie, they will still charge the same amount and now they can only rent the seat and sell candy 4 times per day. A movie theater with a 2-Hour movie will run it at 12:00, 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, 8:00 & 10:00 but to leave time to sell candy (a big-big profit source) they will only screen the movie 4 times in a day. 90-minute movie. We can make money 6 times/day. 120-minute movie. We can make money 4 times/day. Duh. Bottom-line: Foreign Theater circuits are growing and growing. America is saturated. And yes, Foreign Theaters want those Big-Budget, visual, non-story Hollywood Studio Blockbusters… But they also are now wanting, more and more, the 90-minute, one-location movies for their own people. To tell stories for their own nationality, in their own dialects, in their own towns, set on their streets, with their own actors. Hello China; Hello Russia; Hello Brazil; Hello Turkey….. 90-minutes, Keep It Simple, One-Location, now tell a story about your people in your nation with excellent dialogue and strong character driven plot points. And, if you’re not sure how then I hope to see you at the “2-DAY FILM SCHOOL”. Tomorrow’s Hot Tip I will actually post numbers (aka: Dollar amounts) that American low-budget films license to other nations at Film Markets like Cannes, AFM (American Film Market) & EFM (European Film Market).
