HOW JAPANESE SENIOR STUDENTS WELCOME NEWCOMER JUNIORS OR THE JAPANESE WAY OF RAGGING I was in Japan for seven weeks in May June 1990 on an invitation of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). I was to lecture on Himalayan wild fruits at different universities and fruit research stations. While I was at Shimane University at Matsue, I happened to join the welcome party given by the Final year students to the newly admitted first year students. Teachers were also invited. See how the party is going on and how the students are enjoying. Please also see how different is it from the welcome by RAGGING which senior students give to newcomers in Indian colleges. I am seated at the left in 4th picture and sitting in front me is Prof Hiroshi Yamamura, who was my host professor in Japan.
