HOW LEADERS FROM THE NORTH FUELLED ETHNO-RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS. In the early 2000s after Ahmad Yerima went ahead to implement sharia laws in Zamfara,despite the nationwide tensions, Kaduna State Govt too look set to do the same. Afternoons much protests by Christians the tensions keeled over,riots sprang up with Christians and Moslems killing one another. The death toll could be well over 4000, and properties worth billions destroyed. With the fighting showing no signs of abating and showing tendency of spreading,the then President Obj acted swiftly,declared a curfew and called for a meeting of state governors and past heads of states. After the meeting,the vice-president then,Atiku appeared with Ahmad Yerima flanking him on the let and the Kure by the right. Atiku then preceded to announced that the Governors ,past Heads of states and the Presidency have agreed to suspend the application of Sharia laws in any state ofthe Federation. Ahmed Yerima also acquiesced by nodding his head , while Kure of Niger went ba ck to Minna and headed straight to the motor parks persuading non indigenes who were deserting his state enmass , not to go that Sharia law would be suspended. Then out of the blues,came the game changer,Gen Myhammadu Buhari came out to deny that there was never a time,the plans to suspend sharia law was discussed and that any state willing to implement the law must not be intimidated into abandoning it. As a result, Ahmed Yerima who was rather remorseful at the meeting also reneged and told the world he would continue with its implementation. But Mohammed Lawal the late Govt of Kwara state countered Gen Buhari swearing by Allah that they agreed at the meeting not to go ahead with its implementation. But the deed has been done,the die casted,more governors would implement sharia law,more riots would take place,Boko Haram would lend it credence to the call for total sharia implementation and more bloodshed would continue.
