HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL HIPSTER BOUTIQUE IN TOKYO Tokyo is filled with self-proclaimed hipsters. But they are a different breed of hipster than you find in the states. They are classier and their fashion is preppier. They aren’t about the thrift shops, they’re about highly selective boutiques. These boutiques have overrun Tokyo. I have found many commonalities that make up the recipe for running such a shop: 1. Have a point of view on stripes. But within that point of view, make sure they come in a dark shade of blue and are available on short and long sleeve t-shirts. 2. Carry pants of mustard yellow and army green. Slim fit only. 3. Have a small rack near the register with a selection of CDs. The content of the CDs should be a mix of nature sounds and club beats. Throw in a single oldie offering. Make that oldie offering by either John Lennon or David Bowie. 4. You need a passport sized designer sketchbook-journal-day planner. 5. Carry a selection of ‘man accessories.’ A wallet that fits a single credit card or bus pass. A Native American inspired key-chain. Lensless horn-rimmed glasses of black, white and cyan. 6. A selection of t-shirts designed by local artists that feature blurry black and white photographs with nonsensical phrases and paragraphs scrawled over them talking about wolves, passions, destiny, journeys, with the occasional Oasis song lyric woven seamlessly into the rant. 7. Beanies of Wes Anderson approved colorways. 8. A single offering of sports footwear. Could be the New Balances that Steve Jobs rocked. Could be the Nike Air Force One. 9. A hatchet or hunting knife. 10. A collection of cheaply produced zines, filled with blurry photographs of things like power lines, fast food joints, homeless people, strippers, raves or weeds growing from the cracks in sidewalks.
