HOW TO MAKE BLACK SOAP Black soap has been handmade and used for centuries throughout West Africa. It consists of a naturally-derived emollient combined with the nutrient-rich ashes of native African plant materials. Black soap is known for being gentle and is said to cure acne and other skin ailments. It is used on the face, body and hair. Some artisans who make black soap have deviated from the original African recipe by replacing plantain ashes with more accessible cocoa ashes, as well as adding essential oils, herbs or dried flowers. Plantain ashes contain high amounts of Vitamin E and D. INGRIDIENT: Shea butter or palm oil , Plantain skins or Cocoa pods, lavender, or dried plants, such as chamomile 1. Select a base oil. Shea butter or palm oil are traditionally used in Africa 2. Burn any combination of plantain skins and cocoa pods until they turn to ash. • Plantain skins are typically used in Africa, but plantains are rare in many other countries. Soap makers typically replace them with cocoa pods, or they use a combination of the two. • The amount of skins and pods needed will vary depending on how much soap you are making and how concentrated you would like the black ingredients to be in your soap. • The ashes contain potassium hydroxide, which is known for its gentle healing properties. 3. Stir the ashes into warm, distilled water until dissolved. Add more ashes or water as needed until the liquid is as dark and concentrated as you would like. 4. Heat the base oil over low heat in a double boiler until melted and thoroughly heated through. 5. Stir in enough ashy liquid to get the mixture to the desired shade of dark brown or black. Continue stirring over low heat. 6. Add drops of essential oil, such as lavender, or dried plants, such as chamomile, if desired. Traditional African black soap does not contain any additives, but some soap makers prefer to make their own versions of the soap using the scents and benefits these additives provide. 7. Scoop liquid soap from the surface of the double boiler as it begins to form. Transfer it into molds. 8. Cure the soap by leaving it to harden in the molds for up to 2 weeks. The finished product will be solid, but soft and malleable when pressed.
