HOWDY: I WILL POST IN CAPS. :) Paul Griffis 6 hrs. How the Holy Sabbath Day of GODS 4th Commandment Was Changed... Studying the Bible Today I will explain how the change takes place, substituting Sunday for Saturday as the day of worship? This is possibly one of the most disturbing religious questions among thinking Christians today. Unfortunately, the issue is not examined publicly very often for reasons that we’ll consider today. But multitudes have wondered when, how and why the change came about. We know in todays times the Bible itself speaks with absolute consistency on this subject. No Change Documented in the Bible... FALSE: THE GOSPEL ACCOUNT OF MARY GOING TO THE TOMB CLEARLY CALLS BOTH SUNDAY AND SATURDAY THE SECOND AND THE FIRST SABBATH--TWO SABBATHS, BOTH FORESHADOWED IN THE OLD-TESTAMENT DESCRIPTION OF THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREADS STARTING AND STOPPING ON A SABBATH THE 1ST AND 7TH DAY, SYMBOLICALLY INDICATED THE SATURDAY SABBATH OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS AND THE SUNDAY SABBATH OF THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST, ALTHOUGH DEFENDING YOUR ZEAL--WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE. In both Old and New Testament there is not one scripture about change in the doctrine of the SATURDAY Sabbath. The seventh day, Saturday, is the only day ever called by the term Sabbath in the entire Bible. INCORRECT--SEE ABOVE: THANKS. Not only was Jesus a perfect example in practicing and keeping the weekly seventh-day SATURDAY Sabbath, but all His disciples followed the same example after Jesus had gone back to heaven. Yet no sign of documentation or proof of any change of the day is made. The apostle Paul, who wrote many letters of instruction about lesser issues of Jewish and Gentile conflicts, had not one word to say about any controversy over the day of worship. YET CONSIDERING BOTH ARE CALLED SABBATHS, LIGHT IS SHED UPON HIS MEETING THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK FOR BREAKING OF BREAD (EUCHARIST) AS IS STILL HAPPENING CENTURIES LATER/MILLENIA LATER. YOU ARE 2,000 YEARS LATE! :) THE ORIGINAL CATHOLICS HAVE CONTINUED DOING THIS IN THOSE CHRISTIAN CONGREGATIONS THAT HAVE CONTINUED SINCE THAT TIME. AGAIN--CHRISTIANS COME INTO BEING INSIDE AND OUTSIDE CATHOLIC SO-CALLED DENOMINATION :). Circumcision, foods offered to idols, and other Jewish customs were at times challenged by early Gentile Christians in the church, but the greater matter of weekly worship never was an issue. CERTAINLY IT WAS--ISSUE WHEN JEWS WERE CALLING OUT PAUL FOR CHANGING THE LAW--Act 18:13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. THE LAW ENCOMPASSES THE SABBATH AND OTHER THINGS, I TELL. Why? For the simple reason that no change was made from the historic seventh day of Old Testament times, and from creation itself. Had there been a switch from the Sabbath to the first day of the week, you can be sure the controversy would have been more explosive than any other doctrinal issue to those Jewish Christians. PAUL WAS REJECTED IN ASIA AMONG THE CHURCHES; THE JEWS IN ASIA WERE THE ONES WHO HAD HIM IMPRISONED, I TELL. I ENCOURAGE YOU--DO MORE THOROUGH READING! :) History Gives Some Clues... If the change did not take place in the Scriptures or through the influence of the apostles, WHICH IS NOT TRUE AND WHICH THROWS OUT WHAT FOLLOWS BASED ON IF, I ASSURE. when and how did it happen? IT...DID...HAPPEN WITH THE APOSTLES FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE APOSTLE IS THE ONE CLEARLY DELINEATING TWO SABBATHS--SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: SEE MATTHEW 28:1 AT blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&c=28&t=KJV&p=0#s=t_conc_957001 TO SEE SABBATON USED IN BOTH CASES IN THE TOOLS--INTERLINEAR. In order to understand this, we must understand what happened in that early church soon after the apostles had died. TOO LATE. :) HAPPENED MUCH EARLIER--AS RECORDED IN SCRIPTURE: THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE SATURDAY SABBATH WAS NOT STILL OBSERVED IN A CHRISTIAN WAY; CLEARLY THE JEWS UNDER JAMES WERE ZEALOUS FOR THE LAW WITH THE NEWFOUND FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS WHICH WOULD INVOLVE SATURDAY OBSERVANCE, OBVIOUSLY. :):) Paul had prophesied that apostasy would take place soon after his departure. He said there would be a falling away from the truth. One doesn’t have to read very far in early church history to see just how that prophecy was fulfilled. Gnosticism began to rise up under the influence of philosophers who blended Christianity with Paganism. At the same time, a strong anti-Jewish hate became more widespread. Many unGodly interpretations began to appear changing the truthful meaning some of the great doctrines of Christ and the apostles. I PREFER TO STICK WITH BIBLE SCRIPTURE. THE TRUTH IS ALWAYS TO BE FOUND THERE AND IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO MAKE US COMPLETE; WHETHER GOD USES OTHER THINGS OR NOT, OF COURSE. The Conversion of Constantine ConstantineBy the time Constantine was established as the emperor of Rome in the early fourth century, there was a decided division in the church as a result of all these factors. I think most of you know that Constantine was the first so-called Christian emperor of the Roman Empire. The story of his conversion has become very well known to students of ancient history. He was marching forth to fight the battle of Milvian Bridge when he had some kind of vision, and saw a flaming cross in the sky. Underneath the cross were the Latin words meaning “In this sign conquer.” Constantine took this as an omen that he should be a Christian, and his army as well. He declared all his pagan soldiers to be Christians, and became very serious in building up the power and prestige of the church. Through his influence great blocks of pagans were taken into the Christian church. But they were still pagan at heart, and they brought in much of the practices and beliefs such as sun-worship to which they continued to be devoted even today. Also they brought the pagan worship practice of Christmas and Easter into the church. NOTE THAT THE APOSTLE JOHN DISCUSSING THE PASSOVER CALLS IT THE FEAST OF THE JEWS AS OPPOSED TO CHRISTIANS--TO HIS HEARERS: NOTE THAT. At the same time, many other pagan practices and customs were Christianized and brought into the practice of the church as well. Sun Worship You see, at that time the cult of Mithraism or sun-worship was the official religion of the Roman Empire. It stood as the greatest opposer to the new Christian religion. THE TWO SABBATHS WERE INDICATED BY 1ST AND 7TH IN THE OLD TESTAMENT DEVOID OF NAMES. It had its own organization, temples, priesthood, robes—everything. It also had an official worship day on which special worship was given to the sun. That day was called “The Venerable Day of the Sun.” It was the first day of the week, and from it we get our name Sunday. When Constantine forced his pagan citizens into the Christian church they were observing the day of the sun for their love of the sun god. It was their special holy day. In order to make it more easy for them to make the change to the new religion, Constantine accepted their day of worship, Sunday, instead of the Christian SATURDAY Sabbath which had been observed by Jesus and His disciples. ANY OF THESE THINGS ARE OVERLAID ONTO THE ALREADY-OBSERVED SUNDAY SABBATH ALONGSIDE THE SATURDAY SABBATH BY THE EARLY CHURCH; THE QUESTION MIGHT BE BETTER WHEN WE STARTED CALLED THE LORDS DAY, SABBATH--RIGHT, AT THE RESURRECTION; SABBATON FOR BOTH DAYS, REMEMBER? Remember that the way had been prepared for this already by the increasing anti-Jewish feelings THAT. I CALL IT: THAT WAS THE PROBLEM--KEEP GOING, I ASK. against those who were accused of putting Jesus to death. Those feelings would naturally cause many Christians to swing away from something which was held religiously by the Jews. It is therefore easier to understand how the change was forced on Christianity through a strong civil law issued by Ceasar Constantine as the Emperor of Rome. The very wording of that law, by the way, can be found in any reliable encyclopedia. Those early Christians, feeling that the Jews should not be followed any more than necessary, were ready to swing away from the Sabbath which was kept by the Jews. THE COUNCIL OF LAODICEA WHILE RECOGNIZING THAT SABBATHS AND LORDS DAYS :) WERE KEPT INSERTED SOME LANGUAGE ABOUT WORKING; AN ATTEMPT WAS BEING MADE TO KEEP FROM JUDAIZING AND MISTAKING CHRISTIANITY FOR JUDAISM--FOR ALL PEOPLE WERE CALLED OUT OF JUDAISM AND OUT OF PAGANISM TO SOMETHING NEW AND A STEP FORWARD FOR EACH. JUDAISM REAL FOLLOWED GOD WHEREVER AND RIGHT INTO CHRISTIANITY REAL JEWS; PAGANISM BEGAN TO FOLLOW GOD WHERE HE WAS, BEGINNING WITH CHRIST, OR IN SOME CASES FROM RESPECT FOR THE JEWISH TRADITION WITHOUT CONVERTING AS CORNELIUS STRAIGHT INTO CHRISTIANITY VIA THE PREACHING OF THE APOSTLES. Historical Accounts Some of you may be greatly surprised by the explanation I’ve just made, and I’m not going to ask you to believe it blindly. I have a multitude of authorities to verify what has been said. Here are historians, Catholics and Protestants, speaking in harmony about what actually took place in the fourth century more than 300 years after Christ. After Constantine made the initial pronouncement and legal decree about the change, the Catholic Church reinforced that act in mostly all churchs throughout the empire. For this reason, many, many official statements from Catholic sources are made, claiming that the church made the change from Saturday to Sunday. THE CHURH IS THE APOSTLES AND BELIEVERS: SUNDAY BEGAN TO BE OBSERVED BUT NOT EXCLUDING SATURDAY SABBATHS BY THE APOSTLES AT THE TIME OF THE RESURRECTION TO CELEBRATE THE LORDS RESURRECTION; THIS IS INDICATED BY SCRIPTURE IN THE USE OF SABBATH (SABBATON) FOR BOTH DAYS AT THE TIME; THE CHANGE IS FOUND IN SCRIPTURE AT THE VERY BEGINNING PRIOR TO PENTECOST! But before I read those statements I shall refer to one from the Encyclopedia Britannica under the article, Sunday. GO TO THE SOURCE--THE BIBLE. :) Notice: “It was Constantine who first made a law for the proper observance of Sunday and who appointed that it should be regularly celebrated throughout the Roman empire.” THIS IS A CIVIL DECREE YOU DESCRIBE? :):) Now you can check these statements in your own encyclopedias or go to the library and look into other historical sources. Here is a statement from Dr. Gilbert Murray, M.A., D.Litt., LLD, FBA, Professor of Greek at Oxford University, who certainly had no ax to grind concerning Christian thought on the Sabbath question. He wrote: “Now since Mithras was the sun, the Unconquered, and the sun was the Royal Star (the morning star is known in the the Bible as satan), the religion looked for a king whom it could serve as a representative of Mithras upon earth. The Roman Emperor seemed to be clearly indicated as the true king. In sharp contrast to Christianity, Mithraism recognized Caesar as the bearer of divine grace. It had so much acceptance that it was able to impose on the Christian world its own sun-day CERTAINLY THE NAME OF THE DAY IN THE EMPIRE OF ROME WAS USED IN ROME AS THE NAME OF THE DAY TODAY IS USED HERE: SUNDAY. THIS IS THE DAY OF THE WEEK THAT IS THE 1ST DAY. OR PERHAPS OTHER LANGUAGES USE OTHER NAMES. DO THEY? THE NUMBER IS THE SAME--RIGHT? 1ST DAY. in place of the Sabbath; ROME celebrated the sun’s birthday on the 25th of December, so they gave the Christian birthday of Jesus the same day.” History of Christianity in the Light of Modern Knowledge. SEEK TO THE BIBLE FOR THE DATE OF 25 DECEMBER IN THE DAYS OF ZECHARIAH AND HAGGAI AND EZRA AND NEHEMIAH: THE 24TH OF THE NINTH JEWISH MONTH IS OUR DECEMBER AND THE EVE OF THE FIRST FULL DAY THAT THE CORNERSTONE WAS PLACED WHICH WOULD BRING BLESSING--YES 24 DECEMBER THE EVE OF THE CORNERSTONE=CHRIST AS DEFINED BY THE BIBLE. THIS IS NOT INVENTION REGARDLESS OF CUSTOM-OF-CELEBRATIONS. Looking a bit further into historical statements, Dr. William Frederick says: “The Gentiles were an idolatrous people who worshipped the sun, and Sunday was their most sacred day. DO NOT GENERALIZE. MANY GENTILES WERE APPLAUDED BY CHRIST. CORNELIUS WAS A GENTILE WHO HONORED GOD--AND GOD CREATED THEM ALL AND CHOSE ABRAHAM THE GENTILE BORN OF THE LINE OF NOAH THE GENTILE BORN OF THE LINE OF ENOCH THE GENTILE BORN OF THE LINE OF ADAM THE GENTILE--WE ARE ALL GENTILES. JEWS WERE GENTILES. ABRAHAM WAS CHOSEN BEFORE HE KNEW GOD. Now in order to reach the people in this new field, it seems but natural as well as necessary to make Sunday the rest day of the church. USE THE BIBLE. THE APOSTLE MATTHEW USED SABBATH TO IDENTIFY SUNDAY REGARDLESS OF ITS ROMAN NAME AT THE TIME. At this time it was necessary for the church to either adopt the Gentile’s day or else have the Gentiles change their day. BOTH WERE APPROVED; IN FACT MANY CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE THE LORDS DAY IN ANTICIPATED FASHION ON SATURDAY-SABBATH EVEN NOW WHEN ONE DAY IS THE NORM, AMONG CHRISTIANS. To change the Gentiles day would have been an offense and stumbling block to them. IF GENTILES WERE NOT WORSHIPPIING JEHOVAH IN THE FIRST PLACE THEN THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN WORSHIPPING HIM ON ANY DAY AND IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A CHANGE--ARE YOU SAYING THEY WERE WORSHIPPING A FALSE GOD ON SUNDAY AND CHANGING ITS NAME TO JEHOVAH? The church could naturally reach them better by keeping their day.” There it is, friends, a clear explanation by Dr. Frederick as to how this change happened. IT IS CUSTOMARY TO PLANT ONES FLAG ON CONQUERED TERRITORY; ONE CELEBRATES A HARVEST FESTIVAL RATHER THAN HALLOWEEN. THE DAY THAT IS CELEBRATED THAT IS CHRISTIAN SUPPLANTS ANY OTHER CELEBRATION THAT TAKES PLACE ON THAT DAY SUCH AS THE PROPHESIED BIRTHDATE OF JESUS CHRIST BEING PRECEDENCE BEFORE WHATEVER ELSE HELD ON THAT DAY; NO GIVING UP!!! Another statement very parallel to this one is found in the North British Review. But let’s move on to a statement from the Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. 4, p. 153. “The church after changing the day of rest from the Jewish SATURDAY Sabbath or seventh-day of the week to the first day Sunday, made the 4th commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy as the Lord’s day.” THE APOSTLES WHO OF COURSE ARE THE CHURCH AS BELIEVERS ARE FIRST INSTITUTED SABBATH-SUNDAY EVEN WHILE ALLOWING JEWS TO CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE SATURDAY-SABBATH BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY FOR THE BREAKING-BREAD OF THE EUCHARIST WAS INSTITUTED BY CHRIST AND IS SEEN WITH PAUL AS TAKING PLACE ON THE FIRST-DAY SUNDAY, APOSTLE PAUL AS RECORDED BY LUCAS Act 20:7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. AND AS RECORDED BY HIMSELF 1Co 16:2Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. CERTAINLY MUCH MORE CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD IN LIGHT OF THE USE OF TWO SABBATHS IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW AS A FOUNDATION, AGREED? Catholicism Takes Credit for the Change ALREADY ESTABLISHED IS THAT THE CHURCH FROM THE APOSTLES RECOGNIZED SUNDAY AS A SABBATH ALONGSIDE SATURDAY IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW BY MATTHEW JEW. St. Peters Square and Basilica. Now a quote from the Catholic Press newspaper in Sidney, Australia. “Sunday is a Catholic created institution and the Catholic Church claims that observance can be defended only thru Catholic principles. From the beginning to end of Scripture there is not any scripture that authorizes the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first.” NOW HERE IS THE QUESTION: WHERE DID THE SATURDAY SABBATH GO THAT WAS ALONGSIDE SUNDAY--THAT IS THE QUESTION-REDIRECTED, YOU-REDIRECTED. I AM COMING ALONGSIDE YOU. The Catholic Mirror of September 23, 1894, puts it this way: “The Catholic Church for over one thousand years before the existence of a Protestant by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday.” WHAT THIS IS REFERRING TO IS OPTING-OUT OF SATURDAY IN FAVOR OF SUNDAY...ALONE--WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE JEWS: THEY WERE OBSERVING SATURDAY JOYFULLY ALONG-WITH-THE-REST-OF-THE-LAW-ZEALOUS-FOR-IT-WITH-JAMES? I ASK YOU!! To point out the claims we’re talking about, I want to read from two Catechisms. First, from the Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine by Reverend Peter Giermann. “Question: Which is the Sabbath day? Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day. Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Answer: We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church in the Council of Laodicea transferred the written word from Saturday to Sunday.” THE COUNCIL OF LAODECIA RECOGNIZES THE OBSERVANCE OF SATURDAY AS SABBATH AND SUNDAY AS LORDS DAY WHILE CAUTIONING AGAINST JUDAIZING, BY OBSERVING SATURDAY IN THE WAY THAT THE JEWS DO; IT RECOMMENDS READING THE GOSPELS ON SATURDAY AND NOT MERELY OBSERVING IT AS THE JEWS DO IN ADDITION TO THE READING OF THE GOSPELS ON SUNDAY--THE SCRIPTURE OF COURSE INDICATES BREAKING-OF-BREAD OCCURRING DAILY FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE. WHAT ELSE IS ADDED IS AN ADMONITION TO REST AS POSSIBLE ON SUNDAY AS THE LORDS DAY WHICH OF COURSE TRADITIONALLY AMONG THE JEWS IS...WORK AND MIGHT BE DIFFICULT TO NEGOTIATE ::iwouldsay:: RATHER THAN OBSERVING THE SABBATH (THAT IS ABSTAINING FROM WORK AS A SPECIAL DAY AS A JEW RATHER THAN IDENTIFYING AS CHRISTIAN)... THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN BEING SAVED BY CHRIST AND RELYING ON THE LAW FOR SALVATION WHICH WAS TO BE AVOIDED. THEY WERE PROTECTING AGAINST SALVATION BY THE LAW; LEGALISTIC SALVATION NO-SALVATION; KEEPING IN GRACE; KEEPING IN THE LORDS SUPPER ON THE LORDS DAY AS UNIQUELY CHRISTIAN; WHICH YOU INHERITED IN ALL LIKELIHOOD IF RAISED AS A CHRISTIAN FROM THOSE ANCIENT ROOTS IN CATHOLICISM OR ONE OF ITS OFFSHOOTS, AS LUTHERANISM OR GENERAL PROTESTANTISM. YES? Second, from Reverend Steven Keenan’s Doctrinal Catechism we read this: “Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept? Answer: doesnt the Catholic Church have such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day; a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.” YES, SUNDAY AS SABBATH IS BIBLICAL IN MATTHEW-THE-JEW AT THE TIME OF THE RESURRECTION IN THEORIGINAL LANGUAGE BEFORE PENTECOST; CONFIRMED BY PAUL. PETER CONFIRMED ALL PAUL WROTE IN ALL HIS LETTERS; SO THERE. Then from Cardinal Gibbons’ book, The Question Box, p.179, “If the Bible is the only guide for the Christian, then the Seventh-day Adventist is right in observing Saturday with the Jew. Is it not strange that those who make the Bible their ONLY teacher can not follow in this matter what is the tradition of the Catholic Church?” THIS IS THE NEED FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT; THESE THINGS WOULD BE MISSED; THE CHURCH IS THOSE LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. One more statement taken from the book, The Faith of Millions, p. 473. “But since Saturday, not Sunday, is specified in the Bible, isn’t it curious that non-Catholics who profess to take their religion directly from the Bible and not from the Church, observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Yes, of course, it is inconsistency but this change was made about 1,500 years before Protestantism was born, and by that time the custom was universally observed. They have continued the custom even though it was born from the authority of the Catholic Church and not upon an explicit scripture from the Bible. That observance remains as a reminder of the Mother Church from which the non-Catholic groups broke away like a boy running away from home but still carrying in his pocket a picture of his mother or a lock of her hair.” THE APPROXIMATE DATE IS A LITTLE LATE BUT ABOUT THE TIME THAT THE CAUTION WAS MADE AGAINST JUDAICIZING, AND OF COURSE THE...ONE CHURCH--FROM WHOM THE SUNDAY SABBATH CAME THROUGH THE APOSTLES--...ALL DID THE SAME THING UNTIL THE SPLIT WITH THE SPLITTING CONGREGATIONS CONTINUING IN THE FAITH WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE STANDING QUESTIONS THAT DIVIDED. That is a most interesting statement, And it is a very true statement. There is some inconsistency somewhere along the line, because we have examined the statements of history, and you can check them for yourself in any library. I’m not reading anything one-sided here at all. I’ve tried to give you an unbiased picture. ALTHOUGH-INCOMPLETE!! Although we have seen the claims made by the Catholic Church in their publications, we are not reading them to cast any reflection upon anyone, by any means. We are simply bringing you the truth of what has been written and what claims have been AND PLEASE REMEMBER . . . THE REST OF THE...TRUTH!!! THANKS. Back to you. :)+
