Photo/Tenzin Choejor/OHHDL DHARAMSHALA, March 20: The Himachal Pradesh University bestowed upon Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama an honorary Degree of Doctor of Letter (D.Litt) in Shimla yesterday. The Tibetan leader graced the 21st Convocation ceremony of the Himachal Pradesh University along with Governor Urmila Singh. In his address, His Holiness the Dalai Lama emphasized the importance of ancient Indian teachings along with modern education. India is a very rich country full of knowledge and wisdom and there is an urgent need to harness that, especially by the youth, for educational prosperity. His Holiness also highlighted the need of traditional education system for a realistic society. Even I am a follower of ancient Indian gurus and I have used the knowledge to fight problems in life, he said. Photo/Tenzin Choejor/OHHDL He also said that the three major civilizations- Indus valley, Indian and Chinese have given new vistas to the phrase of humanity and incidentally all of them lie in the Asian continent. The ancient Indian language Sanskrit has contributed a lot to the educational platform in society. There is an urgent need to study the language and understand the values enshrined in Sanskrit literature, he said. HPU also conferred Honorary D Litt degree upon Prof S R Mehrotra for his contribution the field of social sciences, Dr Rajendra Kumar Pauchari for Inter-Governmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) while Dr Priyadarshani R Kalara was conferred Honorary Ph D Degree in Medical Sciences. Earlier in the day, His Holiness visited Jonang monastery and also inaugurated a temple at Dorje Drak monastery. He also gave teachings for local Tibetans and Buddhists from nearby areas at the Central School for Tibetans. On asked about his view on the spate of self-immolations in Tibet, the Tibetan leader said the concerned Chinese officials must investigate the self-immolation protests in Tibet. “The Chinese officials must carry out thorough investigation as to what are the causes of these sad events. That’s very important.” He also said that corruption is a form of violence and against the ancient Indian culture. Since 2009, 129 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in Tibet protesting against China’s occupation of Tibet, its hard-line policies and calling for the return of the Tibetan leader Dalai Lama to Tibet. On March 20, His Holiness will give a talk on ‘Success, Ethics and Happiness’ at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi.
