HSU pushes #20 Sonoma State to limit, before falling ROHNERT PARK – First-year Humboldt State head coach Paul Karver has been preaching progress and taking the next steps all season and saw his team push nationally-ranked Sonoma State to the limit on Friday afternoon. Karver’s Lumberjacks put the lone goal of the first half in the net from Samantha Morris and 17 minutes into the latter half Maddi Null tied the contest, 2-2, but the 20th-rated Seawolves Curtin sisters spelled doom in the end. Each sister, Cara and Lauren, netted a goal nine minutes apart for their team’s 4-2 final win. Today shows our growth as a program and to have two girls score their first goals of the year against one of the best teams in the country is a great testament to where we are heading as a program. Sonoma is a very good team, the fight that our girls showed today is what we have been working towards,” noted Karver. The Morris and Null goals combined for the first HSU (3-9-3/1-9-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association North) match with at least two scores since September 13 against Cal State Monterey Bay, the third contest of the year. The two goals surpasses the Jacks total for the entire month of October thus far with only a single tally a week ago at CSU San Bernardino. For the first goal of the match and first of her collegiate career, Morris took a pass from Savannah Havranek from eight yards out past the Sonoma State (10-2-3/8-2-3 CCAA North) goalie into the left side of the net. The girls played a great opening 45 minutes and a great goal for Sammie to open up her college career with,” added the HSU coach. “We always knew there would be goals in the game and the girls showed a great commitment to the game plan and trust in each other as we earned ours. Trailing 1-0 seven minutes into the second half, Lauren Curtin fed Margi Osmundson for the tying goal, 1-1, on a crossing pass. Cara Curtin passed to J.J. McFarlin to put the home squad ahead, 2-1, at 59:26. Only 3:15 later, Null made a sliding directed kick from five yards in front of the goal from the right side off a pass from Colette Behen to deadlock the affair a second time, 2-2. The HSU upset bid would untimately fall short with the Curtin sisters each striking at 71:37 and 80:53 for the 4-2 end. The Seawolves attempted 29 shots to the Jacks five in the match, three on goal. Goalie Kelly Lukas saved seven Sonoma State boots on the afternoon. HSU will stay in the Bay Area for a 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon match at Cal State East Bay.
