HUGE GAME FOR BALLINASLOE ON SUNDAYLiam Courtney, Club PRO. As the last round of league games for Div1A go ahead on Sunday, Ballinasloe face into a hugely important game at home to Westport. Already assured of retaining their place in the top level Junior league for next season, a win on Sunday could see them through to representing Connacht in the AIL round robin play-offs. And after that? Should we dream!!! First, let’s look at the qualification process for the AIL. Corinthians second XV have topped the league but can’t advance to the play offs as their first team is already in the AIL. The team finishing second will go forward and vying for that position are Monivea, Our Lady’s Boys Club and Ballinasloe. Monivea are in pole position on 42points while OLBC and ourselves are three behind on 39 points each while ironically, Monivea are at home to OLBC. With four points for a win and a bonus point for scoring four tries or more as well as points difference coming into play it will be very interesting to see who clinches that second spot come 4 o’clock on Sunday afternoon It is a huge opportunity for Ballinasloe to qualify depending, of course, on the result from the Castle Field. But first they must overcome Westport and that is going to be a major task in itself. There can be no counting of chickens etc. The Mayo side are showing good form recently and have already qualified for the Junior Cup final. Ballinasloe have already had a good win over their guests when they beat them away in the league earlier in the season. With three wins on the road over the last three week-ends, Ballinasloe are in fine form at the moment and their confidence is high. Westport need the league points on Sunday to stave off possible relegation while Ballinasloe’s quest is for loftier ambitions. It all kicks off at 2.30 pm, don’t miss it.
