Since its creation, in 2007, the Foundation broadened its efforts and began to seek funding outside the Estefan family. Prior to branching out to other funding sources, the Gloria Estefan Foundation had disbursed over $3 million dollars in philanthropy to people and charitable organizations in need, including $1 million dollars to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. This past November, Ms. Estefan worked with Roberto Cavalli to host Cavalli’s 2011 Spring Collection at Villa Vecchia in Miami. Proceeds from the evening benefited Gloria’s Foundation and renewed efforts to reach disadvantaged children through education and opportunity. Beyond her foundation, Ms. Estefan’s fundraising efforts included her leadership of a successful $40 million dollar capital campaign to build the Lois Pope LIFE Center in Miami. Most recently, in October, Ms. Estefan led a community march with thousands in Miami to support Las Damas de Blanco – Ladies in White. This campaign group consists of women whose sons and husbands were incarcerated purely for their opposition to the former president of Cuba – Fidel Castro.
