HUMP DAY CHALLENGE ANSWERS! 1. The bone is the proximal phalanx of the big toe! (Phalanx = single, phalanges = plural!) 2. Three muscles insert on this one tiny bone in the foot and they are all in charge of how your big toe moves. 3. This bone is important because it is a part of the first metatarsalphalangeal (MTP) joint. This joint MUST have adequate motion in order to have proper biomechanics for all lower extremity activities from as basic movement as walking to as complicated of a movement as throwing a ball. Lack of motion in this joint can lead to Functional Hallux Limitus. Signs of can include: delayed heel lift, flexed knee, decreased hip extension, straight lumbar spine, and flexion in the cervical spine during gait. This limited motion can also limit shoulder motion. (Yes, from the toe all the way to the shoulder!) Stay tuned for next week....thanks for playing!
