HURRICANE WINDS ON THE VALLEY FLOOR! December 11, 2014 Weather Summary: High winds, heavy rain, and heavy snow in the mountains will characterize the next 48 hours. The central pressure of a mighty storm system is located approximately 300 miles west of the California/Oregon border. The central pressure of the storm is 976 millibars. In tropical terms this would be a category two hurricane. I noticed the ol’ barometer on the wall in Crescent City was down to 29.14 inches of mercury. At Stockton, the pressure was 29.67. In Hanford it’s 29.83. As you can see, there are huge differences in pressure in a relatively short distance. This will be the main force in generating impressive winds in the San Joaquin Valley. As of the time of this writing, winds were already gusting to 50 MPH at the bottom of the Grapevine. They will only increase during the day, peaking tonight and early Friday morning. Hurricane force winds are certainly possible at the bottom of the Grapevine with gusts to possibly 50 to 60 MPH along the west side. Even areas along the east side which typically see much lighter winds could see gusts in the 30 to 40 MPH range.
