HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered an inquiry following complaints that mothers and newborns were being forced to share beds at the Government Maternity Hospital, Koti. The commission has directed the principal secretary, medical and health department, to submit a report on the issue by November 13. The complainant, a practicing lawyer at the AP high court, said it was a common sight to see two mothers, along with their babies, sharing a bed due to space crunch at the hospital. How can they allow newborns to be on the same bed with other patients? They are prone to infections. Who would be responsible if something happens to them? questioned petitioner Y Soma Raju. Moreover, women who have just delivered are being forced to share beds. It is so congested that they cannot even move. Sadly, most of these patients are very poor and have no choice but to bear with the situation. It is shocking that this is happening in a hospital when doctors know that such a practice is not hygienic, Raju added. He demanded that more beds be allotted to the hospital immediately.
