HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE — EVEN IN WINTER Since it’s cold enough to see your breath outside, you may not think you need to stay hydrated during an outdoor workout. However, dehydration also can occur in the cold. In fact, the likelihood of dehydration is higher when training outside or at high altitudes than it is during the summer. According to active, the air you breathe is drier in colder temperatures and your lungs have to work harder to humidify that air and warm it up. The harder your body works, the more you need to drink. There are several things you could do to ensure you don’t lose too much water during the colder months. One suggestion is to wear layers. Even though it’s cold out, you can easily work up a sweat when you are active. Sweat can reduce your body temperature and force your heart to work harder to maintain blood flow and body temperature. The right layers will help absorb sweat. Hydrating with room temperature beverages also could help prevent dehydration. Warmer or room temperature drinks are better at keeping your internal temperature at an optimal level. Colder drinks are absorbed quicker. This change could be a bonus to cold weather workouts since a cold drink will only make you feel colder. Check out the article for more ways to stay hydrated in winter.
