HYMN OF THE WEEK IT IS NO SECRET WHAT GOD CAN DO Carl Stuart Hamblen composed and recorded “It Is No Secret” in 1950. Born in Texas in 1908, Hamblen enjoyed a long and successful musical career as a singer/songwriter. Hamblen was a heavy drinker. When Hamblen quit drinking, he began to lose favor with Hollywood. He was ultimately fired by the radio station when he refused to accept a beer company as a sponsor. Hard times were upon him. During his struggle, John Wayne took him aside and told him all your troubles started when you ‘got religion’ and asked if it was worth it all. Hamblen answered simply, “Yes”. Then he said, “You liked your booze so much. Don’t you ever miss it?” And the answer was, “No”. John then said, “I don’t understand how you could give it up so easily.’ And Hamblen response was, ‘It’s no big secret. All things are possible with God.’ To this John said,Stu, that’s a catchy phrase. You ought to write a song about that.” Stuart got home and sat down at his piano just as the old grandfather clock in the hall chimed the hour of 12 midnight, and began to write, “The chimes of time ring out the news, another day is through..,” finishing in just 17 minutes. youtube/watch?v=KWT8BjS4aw0
