HYPOTHETICALLY of course....would you be interested? Lets say there was going to be a camp for kids with incarcerated parents scheduled for June 12-14 of next year....would you be interested in volunteering? As we know, kids with parents who are in prison have the odds against them. Studies show for boys...there is an 80% likelihood that he will become involved with the criminal justice system. For little girls, stats show there is an 80% likelihood that she will EITHER be involved with the criminal justice system, involved in a domestic violent relationship or brutally raped JUST BECAUSE her parent is incarcerated. Studies also show that the father holds the key to changing this statistic through his actions, communication, and involvement. THIS is why there is such a tremendous push on family programs for incarcerated individuals - less inter-generational incarceration which also means less victims overall! Kids with incarcerated parents have unique needs that other children do not have - and generally speaking they do not have support as they dont have friends that understand what they are going through - many keep it a secret. This camp would be an excellent opportunity to get these kids together, talk about issues that are unique to them, provide them support and have them get to know others who walk in the same shoes as they do in hopes that they would have a better tomorrow! I am attempting to set this up so that the offenders flip the bill for the entire thing...and it is ran strictly through the use of volunteers.
