HYUNDAIS 2nd Plant in HUBLI-DHARWAD!!! HUBLI: To curb the demand for a separate state and appease people of North Karnataka, who are a disappointed lot after Hero Motocorp decided to locate its unit in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has invited Hyundai Motor India Ltd, the second largest automobile player in India, to set up a plant here. According to sources, the office of the commissioner for industrial development wrote to Hyundai on September 23, requesting the company to set up its second manufacturing plant in Hubli- Dharwad. The government has assured possible assistance for the project, the sources added. Meanwhile, chief minister Siddaramaiah, who was in Dharwad on Sunday, reportedly assured the local leaders that the proposal would be pursued. Besides, Dharwad MLA Aravind Bellad, who is also a Hyundai dealer and pitched the idea of inviting the South Korean carmaker to Hubli, is making efforts to convince the company to set up a unit here. Bellad told TOI that he met Hyundais managing director Bo Shin Seo in Delhi recently. He neither accepted nor rejected our proposal but has taken it into consideration. If the government pursues this promptly, it will definitely help North Karnataka people, he said. Quoting his sources in Hyundai, Bellad said the company plans to build a plant in an area where other automobile companies are not present. It is learnt that Hyundai had thought of Gujarat, but it changed plans as Gujarat already has plants of Tata Motors, Ford and Maruti. Now, it is reported that Hyundai is looking for other places and we hope the Karnataka government will utilize the opportunity, he said. As soon as the Hyundai MD announced the plans of setting up a second plant in India last month, we brought it to the notice of the state government, he added. He expressed hope that if Hyundai sets up a unit in Hubli, it will provide 5,000 job opportunities with investment of Rs 1,000-1,500 crore. A delegation of Dharwads elected representatives will be taken to Delhi or Chennai within a week to meet the companys brass. District minister Dinesh Gundurao has consented to the plan, Bellad added. Sources in Hyundai said the company manufactures 6.8 lakh vehicles annually, which can be stretched to 7 lakh. As the company lines up heavy investments in India, we have plans of setting up a second unit in the country. However, the place has not been decided yet, they said. They also said that the company has decided to invest heavily on new plants, as it plans to introduce at least two-three new models every year/
