Habit 2: Day 3 (Pray without ceasing) - How to Be Happy Surprise Church teaching series Do and Dont Multitask God Have you ever felt insulted when someone talks with you while multitasking? It can be frustrating when trying to communicate with someone who appears partially invested and marginally interested. The truth is, whether youre friends, coworkers, teammates, or spouses, you need to devote some amount of time to looking at one another, eyeball to eyeball, as if to say, Ok, Im really here with you. You matter and I want to interact with you with no distractions. And when you take time to give someone your full attention, your relationship is more developed and prepared for the busy times, when life is happening and you can only give them a percentage of your relational bandwidth. Its sort of like a team that practices alone together until theyre ready to go out and play other teams (hey, I said sort of!). And this is not unlike our relationship with God. We need time to look into his eyes and focus all your human faculties so as to perceive the slightest fraction of His majesty. And when you allow yourself to take that sweet time, as painfully difficult as it can be for busybodies like us, your heart will eventually discover and whisper prayers things like In your light, we see light... (Ps 36:9). And then, with our compasses rightly set, we can do life and be busy without ending the prayer connection with God. We can include the rest of the world in a conversation that isnt just between us and Him anymore. We multi-task God by living our lives for Him, doing our best to keep His power, priorities and presence in mind while we work and study and gett dressed and walk the dog. And this doesnt bother God a bit. He is NOT insulted when we multi-task Him. Its His goal really: ...Talk of [Gods Word] when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand... (v. 7-8). In other words, multi-task God into every mundane corner of your routine. And its a whole heck of a lot easier when we dont multitask God all the time, when we periodically look into His light with all our might. So multitask God and dont multitask God. Clear as mud?
