Habits and Effective Living A person lives effectively when he uses his powers to the full; and to use his powers to the full he needs a well-adjusted, smooth-running machinery of living. Doubtless you recall the New Testament parable of the talents. A master was going away on a journey, and before he left he turned over certain funds to his servants—five talents to one, two to another, and to yet another only one. When he returned he inquired what had been done with the money. The servant with the five talents had traded skillfully and now had ten. The servant with two talents now had four. But the servant with one talent had added nothing to it. How was this? The master inquired. The servant had a long array of excuses. He considered his master a hard and unfair man, who exploited others and accepted what he had not earned. So, rather than take chances, he buried his one talent in the ground. Here it was, as good as ever! There is profound psychology in this parable. The unprofitable servant was paralyzed by fear and anger directed towards his master, both attitudes being, as it seems, of long standing. His clogged, ill-adjusted habit-mechanisms prevented him from using what he had, from acting effectively, from living effectively.
