Hachi 2: A Dog’s Tale By: Linda Lane - Bloise Upon our return from a Thanksgiving trip we noticed a great looking dog sitting in our street looking across the highway to the Allsups’ parking lot. He would walk up and down the street and then find a place to rest for a while in either our neighbor’s yard, across the side street, or under our carport. Being a dog lover, I recognized the dog breed right away as being an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog….with the breed’s typical coloring and markings. Such a sweet and handsome animal, my first inclination was to bring him into our home right away since he had no tags and continued to hang around day after day; those few days following Thanksgiving were very cold. However, we already have two four legged babies and realize that’s plenty for us. We did offer the stranger food and water under the carport, which he received enthusiastically..., what to do? I called the Vet and the Police to see if anyone had reported a missing dog even though I had the definite feeling that someone must have abandoned the animal at Allsups while traveling through Haskell; he constantly had his eyes on Allsups lot as though he was watching and waiting for someone. I can only hope that no one would leave a pet and just drive off….but this has happened more than once and more than once we have been fortunate to find a new home for these sweet animals. Neither the Police nor the Vet Office had any leads, so we waited for a few days and then posted a picture on face book hoping that would bring results. We asked that anyone who might be interested giving the dog a home, should we not hear from an owner, to call or get in touch. Sure enough a couple we knew from Rochester, Shirley and Dickie Sloan, contacted us and said that if an owner didn’t claim our visitor, they would like to have him. We were delighted for this family and the sweet dog! In the afternoon they came in their pick up and met the dog who, after getting acquainted with them, jumped right into the pickup and slept with his head on Shirley’s soft boot on the floor all the way to the edge of Rochester. They stopped on the way to pick up dog food and, when they got home, prepared a warm bed, for their new pet, on their porch within the fenced yard. Alas, when they woke up the next morning, he was gone….he had slipped out through a loose gate! That morning early when they realized he was missing Shirley called to tell me what had happened…and…. would you believe, while we were talking on the phone, I glanced out the window and who did I see? The dog had come back from almost 20 miles away! Neither of us could believe what I saw, but sure enough….there he was, sore paws and all! Dickie repaired the fence and Shirley came back immediately to retrieve the Vagabond Dog and he jumped right into her pick up and off they went….. Again. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this happy Christmas Tale about an abandoned Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, whose loyalty is awesome regardless of his past circumstances, and the kind caring people who have offered him the opportunity to trust again and have given him a loving home. Here’s hoping they all live happily ever after! Prologue I: The Sloans have named their newly adopted dog Hachi 2…..The name is taken from the true story of a dog whose master was killed in a train wreck and the loyal dog went everyday for the rest of his life, at the same time, to meet his master’s train, sleeping on the same spot near the train station, waiting. The town’s people erected a statue of the dog because of his loyalty. Both the book and movie are titled “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.” Prolouge II: Two weeks later, we heard from the Sloans that Hachi 2 would simply not stay fenced….. however, he now would always come back to their house. Friends of theirs outside Seymour asked to take him to their ranch where they have other dogs and plenty of room for the dogs to roam safely. As of this post, Hachi 2 is there …what a Lucky Dog to have so many who care about his welfare…and are willing to find the most acceptable home situation for this amazing animal. As Amazing and Miraculous as it may be......low and behold, guess who appeared at our Back Door, just before press time this morning [Wednesday, December 17]?....Yes ! You guessed it.....the Vagabond dog Came Back all the way from a ranch outside of Seymour....so Hachi 2 will most likely become part of our family. We will keep you posted! Merry Christmas!
