Had SUCH a British moment today. We have encountered Weird Sofa People. There we were, the place a quarter full at best, us both obviously working - chatting a bit but each with a laptop open, typing away. We were sitting on the Comfy Sofa - one of few comfy sofas on the place, but the rest of the chairs are fine. The set-up is such that two Comfy Sofas are placed opposite one another, with a table in between - not quite knees-touching, but close together. To me, they are obviously intended for one group of people. We were both sitting on the same sofa as we occasionally needed to look at the same laptop. Wed chosen the larger of the two sofas to sit on because, why wouldnt you. So in came Weird Sofa People. A couple (who I assume from their accents and conversation to be upper middle class) and a perfectly well-behaved child of about age 10. They proceeded, without making any eye contact or acknowledging our existence, to sit on the other sofa (there were many many other chairs and tables available). Everything then got excruciatingly British. We didnt acknowledge them, they didnt acknowledge us, but they blatantly didnt have enough room on their sofa, as the child had to sit on (variously) the sofa arm, a parents lap etc. We were just a little too close together for it to be comfortable (again, British). Bekky and I texted each other, checking that this was Weird. We ascertained that yes, this was definitely weird, and also...not RUDE exactly, but very culturally odd. Most British people would have opened with excuse me, do you mind if we share your table? And possibly a we really need this comfy sofa because, Reasons. But it was kind of like...they wanted that comfy sofa, and if they aggressively ignored us for long enough, we might just go away. Possibly vanish out of existence, I dont know. We have no idea why they wanted it so badly, or indeed, if we had actually briefly gained a superpower of invisibility. Obviously we agreed over text that IT WAS ON, and that they could have our sofa over our charred and rotting corpses. But still...yeah. Weird Sofa People. That happened.
