Had a bit of a scare with the engine this weekend, we noticed it - TopicsExpress

Had a bit of a scare with the engine this weekend, we noticed it was idling a bit rough and determined with a little advice from some friendly Honda Cup guys that she was only running on 3 cylinders at idle. After determining that spark and fuel were getting to the dud number 2 cylinder, decided just to carry on regardless as it seemed to be alright when revved and not blowing smoke or doing anything else weird. The results on track were pretty good so decided it cannot have been anything major. After getting home, I checked the compressions and they were not great - 180, 20, 230 and 160. Honda tuning guru Sam White had suggested that valve clearances could well be the issue as these engines close up as they wear causing the valves to not fully close. Sure enough on checking the tappets noticed the inlet valves on 3 of the cylinders had no clearance at all. After adjusting them the compressions are now 230,230,230,230 (Sigh of relief) Not quite sure why they closed up so quickly as they were checked not so long ago before the engine was tuned. Lesson learned, check valve lash at least 2x per season!
