Had a discussion about culture, choice, and gender yesterday. A few years back, I attended something called Torskeklubben (sp?)- a Norweigan-Canadian club. At this club, Norweigan (and Swedish, and some Scottish and one Hispanic) dudes sit around and tell dirty jokes while eating trout and drinking aquavit. The wives of the men in the hall were bustling around in the kitchen, also telling jokes and socialising. Obvioulsy, theres a generational aspect at play, as well as a cultural one. I never got the feeling that any of those ladies were interested in being in the hall with the guys- and my experience with many older people is that they were often socialised to have less interest in platonic association with members of the opposite gender (and non-binary genders were not even considered a thing). Meanwhile, at our place, Lyn has always been critical of the Torskeklubbens gender segregation- and yet, she, Angie, and Shandi kicked everyone out of the kitchen in the lead-up to dinner last night.... So a bunch of us (mostly cis males) ended up sitting and drinking and talking while the girls cooked and prepped. And were NOT big on enforced gender roles around the house... So I have to wonder how much of Torskeklubben is evil patriarchal bullshit, and hiw much is letting some grown people make their own choices about how to associate.
