Had a fantastic day on Friday while visiting one of our local elementary schools. While waiting for the individual I was supposed to record I noticed many of the kids in latchkey had guitars with them (they have a guitar club at the school). I started talking with the kids and asked if I could play one of their guitars. Their teacher/club sponsor had been teaching them a lot of classic one note at a time riffs like Smoke on the Water, the Peter Gunn Theme and others. One kid asked me to play Salvation Army. Knowing that Jack White had named Seven Nation Army after his own childhood mishearing of Salvation Army, I played that. That is what the kid expected! I played a bunch of western finger-style double stop stuff for them as they watched mesmerized. Then I told them that was the first time I had ever picked up a guitar. One kid freaked out and proclaimed NO WAY! I did come clean with them- and had one of the most uplifting days Ive had in a real long time. Hopefully they got something out of it too... (yes, I did do a little teaching while I was at it.)
