Had a great retirement luncheon today! Many great friends and mentors showed up, and that meant the world to me! Kind words were spoken of me, I was humbled by that! The most humbling part was that the bill for the entire table of 11 military folks and myself was picked up by a patron eating lunch there also. I asked the server who it was, she pointed out the table and went over to thank them. What I was greeted with was extremely humbling... It was a husband and wife with their 10 yr old son and 4 yr old daughter, they were visiting from Tennessee. The son pulled his wallet out and took his $50 spending money he had and gave it to his dad saying he wanted to pay for our lunch! The dad told him to put it back in his wallet and called our server over and paid our bill!! A total i am sure was $200-$250! We were very humbled by that! I was awarded the USAF Meritorious Service Medal, my former commander had pinned it on my civilian shirt, I unpinned my medal and gave it to this gracious young man! The family was speechless, the daughter kept saying are you sure? Thats your medal! Yes I am sure! Great job by the parents teaching respect and honor! Awesome for the boy to exhibit such a great character at 10! I will be sending him a couple of my AF photos!! That was a most humbling way to end a great military career!
