Had a interesting conversation with one of the supervisors at work today. He asked me how I can equate libertarianism with my Mormon faith. He said he asked his other Mormon friends about it and they just could not see how any Mormon could be libertarian given the conservative Christian values of the church. This was my chance to explain that the majority in the Mormon faith dont truly understand the Mormon doctrine as I do. I explained that the churches position on government is outlined In doctrine and covenants section 134 which states we believe that no government can exist in peace, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the free exercise of conscience, the right and control of property, and the protection of life. And that free agency is a fundamental principle of the gospel. That this free agency gives us the right to choose for ourselves how we will live and no one has the right to decide for us. Every other political party would decide for us how we are to conduct our own lives which is contrary to the principle of free agency central to Mormon doctrine. Essentially I dont understand how you can be Mormon and not be libertarian. I told him we have a responsibilities to as Joseph smith said I teach them correct principles and they govern themselves and that is how I can be Mormon and libertarian.
