Had a little insight into why I like gimmicky, low-ambition instrumental records. They ask nothing! They are devoid of human or even animal complication--you dont empathize or commune with them, you just pick them up like pretty rocks, put them in your pocket and amuse yourself with them. They ask nothing, and when they are good they bring amusement and even joy with no strings attached. The musicians are invisible; no singer is asking to be believed or respected or loved, and there isnt even a plaintive solo, just a bunch of instruments carrying on like fools for your amusement. The musicians were paid a long time ago and are anonymous, absolutely out of the picture. They are (perhaps questionable) aesthetics without ethics. They are happy accidents with no victims. Make fun of them, hate them, love them--they dont care, they just want to be played. This is not how I would want all music to be, but there are places for both Van Gogh and pretty rocks in museums.
