Had a very TSA-ish ilike moment with a goon here at Defcon. I was heading into P&T theater to see a talk and was stopped and told there are no outside food or drinks. I said no problem and finished my Starbucks, then proceeded to head in and he nabbed me again because I had a paper Starbucks bag with closed items that cant leak and told me I had to dispose of them. I told him I wasnt going to open them and I would put the items (two protein bars) in my purse and I wouldnt dare to eat in the theater. He told me I had to remove them and dispose of them or not enter. So, I calmly told him that wasnt logical and asked him if he could try to be reasonable with me. I explained that hundreds of pounds of food just crossed him in closed backpacks and that those people were not searched and that he was only penalizing me because my bag was made of paper. He admitted that he was doing what he was doing because he could see it and had knowledge of it and that hundreds of people were secretly breaking the rules but because I was transparent I could not. So I said fine, went around the corner, put it in my bag, sealed it shut and walked through again and he asked if I disposed of the items and I told him no, but I was now like everyone else and asked that he consider the logic. He did and realized I was right and let me through finally. When I got to the door, I asked an usher if the food (an actual Rio employee) was going to be a problem if zipped up in my purse and showed them the sealed packages and they said it was fine. Im not going to do anything the theater doesnt want me to do, but Im not going to listen to a goon whos become binary and high off temporary authority. This guy was smart and I kept telling him he was, but that he wasnt making sense. The fact that he finally agreed was not like TSA, but there was moment where I thought I was getting bounced. Coffee? Banana? Sure. I can see banning me walking in with something that will visibly harm the theater, but singling me out was strange. He did apologize. So, yeah, maybe not a lot like TSA.
