Had a very inspiring afternoon at Unite the Resistance conference where I heard speeches by fellow disability rights friends and activists from DPAC, other community grassroots campaigns such as the utterly brilliant Freedom Riders from Yorkshire, the Care UK strikers; An absolutely thunderous speech from the GS of the RMT Union, Comrades from PCS DWP and HMRC as well as the finest Labour MP and all-round mensch remaining in what is now the Red Tory party John McDonnell MP among many others. I gave a brief report back to the assembly about how we in Scotland are fighting now to return 59 SNP MPs to Westminster in May and about assurances I received from the Depute Leader of the SNP Stewart Hosie MP last week in Dundee that when we march on Westminster in May we will be fighting against disability cuts and austerity not just for us in Scotland but for all our communities on our isles. I said that my greatest hope was for a powerful alliance between the SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party to hold Labour by the jugular in any new government on a Confidence and Supply basis to push through our demands. I also encouraged folk to take direct action at Labour Party constituency offices throughout England to make clear that their current neoliberal Blairite trajectory is utterly unacceptable. The £120bn a year tax avoidance and corporate/banking fraud must end with immediate effect. I began my address by asking the old question What is to be done? - I hope I managed to answer at least some of it in the few minutes allotted. Judging from the warm applause I think UK comrades were happy with it. Solidarity forever! Our struggle continues until we have beaten back austerity and established justice for all!
