Had an interesting moment today. Had a hundred errands to run and wanted to move QUICKLY. However, I had to make a return to Talbots and for the first time in my life there was a LINE! Never happens. I said a quiet little prayer that I would not be impatient, but rather just enjoy living in the moment and the neatest thing happened - well in MY eyes it was the neatest - a tender mercy for me - for sure!! I overheard an elderly gentleman talking to his wife. She was trying on clothes and he was sitting nearby being so sweet to her as she would come out the dressing room. He caught me smiling at them and then jokingly said, I approved it all it all referring to her many clothes choices. It opened the door for conversation and it did not take long to recognize that familiar accent. Are you from New York?, I said. Turns out they grew up there but lived and worked in CT and then FL for most of their married life. When their two sons (another instant connection) moved to the area, they did too. They now live in Sun City - right by my inlays! Another connection!! The conversation continued on and eventually went to where to get real Italian food here in SC. I learned they used to own a restaurant in Lighthouse Point, FL right near my inlaws old home. Once we shared names - his Vincent and hers Ida - I told them that although my last name was Clancy - my maiden name was Chirco. That when we started talking about Italy. I started tearing up when he told me of his Sicilian ancestry- Palermo to be exact. An unexpected flood of emotions came over me. I missed my NY home, my family, my culture, my people and I told him that it was my wish one day to go to Italy and see where I was from. I told Vincent all about my Grandpa Chirco who emigrated from Sicily when he was 8. I also told him about Connors big trip this coming summer. Bottom line is I felt connected - I know it sounds silly but it was something I realized I have been missing. It was VERY emotional for me. We shared contact information and hugged as if we were family. I needed that! Still makes me emotional writing this! NEAT DAY!!! (Gonna post a pic of my Grandpa Chirco in a few, too. Its on my other computer!)
