Had the coolest damned thing happen today,up on the mountain. Not too long before the snow arrived (Noonish),I had left the big clearcut, and was slowly workin my way out through a mix of open hardwood, and some whips, off to my East.Every now and then,I KNEW I could hear a twig snap, some footsteps.... I eased over to one of my old haunts ( remains of an old log, tucked into some ledge.) to slip in quietly for a better look.Down over this old exposed ledge, down into the hardwoods,I could see almost a hundred yards.I got myself comfortable, sitting behind a chunk of the ledge, pulled out my doe bleat call, and gave a couple bleats.Sure as shit,in a minute or so,I see a belly and some legs.Pulled up my rifle as I was switchin off the safety.Approximately 40-50yds away, out from behind a little fir and some whips, steps the deer.Crosshairs on it.Yep......the culprit of the blackberry bush rubbings! LOL! The little shit had spikes that would not have made him legal even BEFORE the 3 Point Rule.MAYBE 2 inches.MAYBE! He might have gone 105lbs soakin wet. So,ON goes the safety, and I decide to teach him a lesson.Couple more bleats......in he comes.Lookin,twitchin,sniffin,stompin.....I think he was lookin right over the top of me.He finally stops......AT 15 FEET!! 15 FEET!!! I cannot resist any longer.I say in a very sarcastic, smartass voice.HEY,WHAT ARE YA DOIN?!.Well, hed like to have passed out right there! He made a sound I do not think ANYONE could ever duplicate.Something like a cross between an actual buck grunt, and the sound a balloon makes when you pinch it and let the air slowly out! Eyeballs bugged out of his head,he wheeled around, blew and blew and blew, and down the hill he went! I laughed so hard, right out loud,my sides ached and I had a coughing fit.I tell people to get out and hit the woods. You will NEVER see that stuff, sitting in your easy chair, playing with your electronics. So friggin cool! As an anticlimactic side note.watched two does, back all covered with snow, feed across the edge of the cut,as I worked my way back down off the mountain.Drying things out by the stove now,and relaxin, watching the snow. Have a great evenin, folks!
