Had the good fortune to preview Arrested Developments Jason - TopicsExpress

Had the good fortune to preview Arrested Developments Jason Bateman is his directorial debut in Bad Words at the wonderful Michigan Theater. A hard core Bateman plays Guy Trilby, a 40 year old, who sets to work out his childhood issues by winning the national spelling bee. A loop hole allows him to compete against 12 year olds who become victims of his heartless mind games. The black comedy comes along with insults that would make Don Rickles proud and has the vulgarity of Bad Santa. Just as you want to hate the jerky Trilby, he forms a fun relationship with a naïve Indian boy, Chaitanya, who has friendship issues of his own. Their interactions and adventures backed by fun music by the Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins are the best part of the film. While the characters arent really developed it was nice that Bateman ties everything together adequately in an efficient 90 minutes. The film is built round gags and R rated laughs that are more hit than miss thanks to Batemans good comedic timing. B+.
