Had to repost these, very applicable to me!! This Nigerian situation is almost confounding now. I sit here in the darkness of my room asking myself where it all went wrong. Flashback to the 70s, 80s when i grew up in Ojuelegba in Lagos where I was born.I remember how my mother instilled basic values of honesty, hard work, selflessness and integrity in us growing up. I got the beating of my life for keeping bad company defined as any one who was a layabout, liar, rude, unruly or didnt get an education....we knew the difference between good and bad. I worked myself through life believing if I stayed on the straight and narrow, I will eventually make it in life. Fast forward to 2014 and I am almost confused...all around me, the values I was raised with are not worth much in my country anymore. All that my mum taught me to avoid are being celebrated and glorified. Thugs and thieves are in positions of authority. Money is the motivation for everything. Young girls spread for as little as N500. People betray your trust in order to make more money. Young people are rooting for men and women without character. Political parties field thugs, drug barons and thieves as candidates for public office. Bad is the new good. No one is held accountable for their actions anymore. The end justifies the means is the norm. Everyday, I am asking myself, why do I feel like an alien in my own country? Did my mother raise me wrong? ~Written sola salako, but its salient to me too...
