Hail Caid! We stand on the verge of WAR! Actually, we are all prepping and packing for the biggest event in our Kingdom. Indeed there are a number of fine folks who are already there setting up the campsite for us (thank you!). We have guests from many other Kingdoms who are attending, as well as Newcomers experiencing the SCA for the first time. Let us remember a few things before we go, and to keep in our minds while we are enjoying Great Western War: 1. Be Safe! Please don’t check your brain at the gate! Yes, we are on vacation, but let’s not be foolhardy in anything we do. Think constantly about all of these: Fire Safety, Sunscreen, Dehydration, Watch your Kids and Pets, Don’t hit the wrong nail (or tent spike) with that mallet, Don’t overdo imbibing, and Make sure you KILL, not INJURE your combat opponent. Have fun, but don’t be stupid. 2. Courtesy is the hallmark of our SCA society, and we should always be gentle with our fellows. Don’t let the aforementioned children or pets impact the war for others. Offer a stranger a drink of water, the shade where you are standing, or a spritz from your sunblock spray. Everyone is fighting some type of battle, so be kinder than you need to! It is honorable to be good to others! 3. Keep up appearances! Hide those beer cans; pour your beverage into a mug. Stay in garb as much as you can! Keep your camps cleaned up, and pack out your Gleanables (recycle cans and bottles are being collected! Bag them separately for the Gleaners Guild!) We are here to enjoy a Middle Ages environment, try not to knock anyone out of The Zone! 4. Volunteer! This event happens because of all the hard working people, and that should be YOU TOO! Put in at least 2 hours volunteering, so someone else does not have to put in 20! Do your part to keep the War running efficiently by helping out.
