Hail Ramanuja!!! இராமானுசனென்று சொல்லுமினே!!! Our earth is covered upto 2/3rd by oceans and the rest portion is the land. The 2/3rd portion without water would look like a huge pit. This would mean it is possible to move the 1/3rd land portion into this pit filling it thereby the water in the ocean fills the rest of the 1/3rd land portion thereby the whole surface of the earth would become submerged in the oceans. This was exactly what was done by the demon Hiranyaksha. As they portray in the pictures and animations he did not roll the entire spherical earth as a mat and place it under water, rather he rolled up the surface of the land portions and submerged them in the oceanic pits that made the water raise from there and fill back into the left out land portion. Due to this, the life forms that are terrestrial in nature came to extinction and the earth also lost its balance due to heavy change in the landscape and thus the 24 hours, 365 days cycles were all disturbed.. Now, as Swamy Varaha descended down, after destroying the demon, His first job was to restore the landscape of the earth. Swamy Varaha, again as depicted in the pictures, did not have two horns. Rather the two pointed structures that we see were his tusks(called as eyiru in Tamil). He had a single horn (similar to the Rhinoceros) and is hailed as Eka Sringa in the Vedas. With this single horn, He pierced the earth and started pulling out the land that was submerged under the ocean. The first touch of His horn on mother earth was at a place that is now hailed as Sri Mushnam (in Tamil this place is known as muttam meaning the place that was hit by His horm). Later on, Swamy went on to restore the mountains and carefully architected the landscape in such a way that the lands had a standard slope starting from the hill tops till the ocean borders and hence this way as the rains shower over the hills and mountains, the water thus collected will flow as a river and reach the ocean, nourishing and flourishing the path with fertility through the various minerals and herbs that it gathered on its ways. If such a slant was not maintained we would see no rivers today. What a beautiful work this is! Today we get rains because of the mountains where the clouds hit and are forced to raise up there by cooling and condensing into rain. And this rain water becomes a river and flows all the way till the respective oceans only because of the carefully constructed slant landscape. And after all these feats (though casual for His nature) Swamy ascended to the space and held mother earth in His single horn and restored her back in the orbit and restored her spin (self rotation and revolution around the sun). So, the days and nights were back in their cycles. The life forms were restored by His bountiful grace. Today, whatever we enjoy on the surface, above the surface, below the surface, the time, day, months and years - all were the biksha of Sri Varaha Swamy. We are utmost indebted to His great unconditional bountiful grace and mercy to the so called humanity. As a gratitude to this great service of Lord Sri Varaha Swamy, this kalpa was named after Him as the svetha varaha kalpa (It is our faith that such an event happens in a cycle through various means such as through demons or other mischiefs by the mundanes and that Sri Varaha Swamy appears and destroys those negative forces and restores the Land and starts off a kalpa, a new lifecycle, under the name of His own self). Let us celebrate Lord Sri Varaha Swamy understanding His deeds and greatness in the right perspective without any superstitious stories that would make the younger generation also develop better faith based on rationale and not through blind belief.
