Hair Corner: Ive been often asked about color often with questions ot concerns like: I gave color a chance and my hair fell out? Why cant I relax and be a blonde in the same day? I want this bright red, pink, blue but work yout miracle without any bleach or lightner please... Lets address, shall we? Lets return to color 101 and begin with the 4 types of color so you understand a bit about color and its various forms. Class is in session! Semi-permanent color: Semi permament color is color that can be used immediately after a chemical service such as relaxation. It actually works wonderfully with freshly relaxed hair because the hair can absorb the semi permanent even better than it would during any simple wash and blow out service. The hairs cuticle is open and receptive because of its relaxed state. No ammonia, strictly deposit, no lift action and only alters tone of hair not the chemical make up of the hair. Hence, it is very safe. The molecules in this type of color are large so they coat the hairs cuticle. They do not penetrate into the hairs deepest layer. It will wash away over time and return to hairs natural color unless continuously applied over time causing more permanent results with continued use and application. Demi permanent color: It is also ammonia free in most cases or very low ammonia. It is deposit color. There is no lift action but there is slight difference in behaviour from semi permanent. There is a deeper penetration as the molecules of this type of color are slightly smaller than semi permanent. The wear is longer for this reason and demi permanents are often used for toning purposes and hair filling (Im hitting my professionals with the terms they know and for my dear novices...e see me and ill go deeper into this ;) ) Demi is cool because if you are already prelightened you can create nice vibrant affects with little stress on the hair and no long term commitment. Permanent Color: My fave and the MOST scary for clients! Permanent color requires the use of peroxide. It has small molecules that penetrate inyo the inner part of the hair where the melanin lies in darker hair called the cortex. It lifts out the melanin to then replace that melanin with new color. There is lift action and the hair is altered permanently. It can NOT be applied during any other chemical service. There must be a wait time of 2.5 weeks between relaxation and color to allow the hair to recoup and gain strength. There is more to add! Come see me and Ill share and consult with you. Class is over ;) Another waving wand moment with your Fairy Hair Mother :)
